I started with a solid free template and customized it fairly extensively, both to make it look the way I wanted and to learn how templates worked in Drupal.

I too downloaded a free WordPress theme and then customized it heavily. My theme now does most of the things, I wanted it to do for me.

I have a free template. My designer is working on making it match my main website, but teh free one is doing the job in the interim.
