After writing 5 Tricks to Earning With Google AdSense, I've received many requests for more tips on how to get the most out of the contextual ad program.
Let's review the basics first (for details, please refer to the previous article):
- When posting, stay on topic.
- Update often.
- Place ads in your blog's "hotspots".
- Blend your ads with the page.
- Track your stats.
Once you have the basics down, here are a few more ideas to consider:
Keep your page design clean.
A cluttered page is very much like a cluttered house- it's often hard to find the things you're looking for. This is not ideal for a blog.
What are the chances of people clicking on your AdSense ads if your page is loaded with various buttons, widgets, and other links alongside your content? Much less than if you keep it neat and organized.
If you look at a newspaper, there is a place for everything- text, photos, ads. Everything is arranged so that it is easy to find what you are looking for, and still, advertisements are clearly visible and often catch the eye. The same goes for your blog- everything has its place.
Use keywords.
Some blog platforms allow you to assign keywords to your blog posts. Use them. This will allow for more relevant ads on your pages. But be sure not to use too many (10 is usually enough), and the more targeted, the better.
Give your readers what they want.
Sometimes readers will request information on a specific subject. If you are able to write about it, do so. This is one of the best ways to keep people coming back to your blog. (And if you can keep the traffic flowing, the chances of someone clicking on an ad will be greater.)
Another great way to fill the needs of your readers is to track your blog's stats- more specifically, the terms people used to find your site in search engines. It's not uncommon for people to search for a topic you haven't covered yet, but still arrive at your blog because the key phrase they entered was relevant to your content. If you can, write about those topics.
Change it up.
All blogs are different, so naturally, the strategies that work for one blog may not work for another. Don't be afraid to try new things. Move your ads to different spots on the page, or switch to image ads, or change the text color a bit. Sometimes it's the little tweaks that make all the difference.
Please note: When making changes to your ads (whether it be placement, the type of ads displayed, etc.), the effects may not be noticeable in the short term. Unless your earnings drop significantly, I think it is best to wait at least a month after changing your AdSense strategy before deciding what is right or wrong for your blog. After all, AdSense earnings are not very predictable, and what you earn depends on your readers. High and low traffic months will have a significant effect on your earnings, as will the type of visitors you pull in.
